Education Standards Met

Multimedia Project: Windows Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker

This program allows you to quickly and easily put movie clips and picture files together with sound to create a video. As a teacher you could use this program to make a slide show of student pictures to learn their names. You could also have students use the program to create multimedia projects. This is an excellent program for students because it is easy to learn.

Analyzing Student Data in a Spreadsheet

This assignment would have been very quick and easy for me using excel. Having to use google sheets was a little more difficult. The simplified features of google made it a little more difficult. Typically I would have sorted the data by average test score and then graphed the scores below the average by selecting that data. In google I had to just delete the scores I didn't want. It is nice to have google host the files for you, however, the features of excel make it a better, easier product to use for someone who has worked with the program.

Google docs had an error when I duplicated sheets. The formulas were messed up and I had to fix them.

This is my finished presentation.

Looking at the below average scores upward trend shows that these students all progressively improved on the test. In general each student increased their score each consecutive test. The increase of test scores over time shows that the teacher's methods worked well to help the below average students. The following are the test scores of these individuals.

skype

Skype is not difficult to use. Sign up was easy. However, the file download was a little large. It's too bad this is a program and not a web 2.0 application. That is a big down side. Skype is good for calling others who have skype that are long distance, so you don't have to pay any long distance fees. I'm not sure how I would incorporate it's use into a classroom. I think this may primarily be a program for personal use.

Web2.0 tool demo

Jennifer and I chose to explore delicious.com further for our presentation. Delicious is an excellent site for those who can't remember the urls of sites they may need. I'm starting to use it myself. In the presentation we explain what delicious.com can do and how it can be used by teacher in the class room.

My Favorite Web2.0 tools

Web2.o is an online environment that can perform like an application. Since it is online there is no software to download and any web2.0 apps can be used from any computer.

As an educator using web2.0 tools can make life easier. When using online apps, you never have to worry about not having a document or presentation with you, they're on the web whenever you need them. Having online apps also eliminates compatibility problems.

Two of the web2.0 apps I found particularly interesting are:

This site allows you to create bookmarks. It can be done as an add on to some browsers and it is a web 2.0 program. Often I go somewhere and want to access a site that I may have bookmarked but can't remember what the site was. With delicious.com your bookmarks are wherever you go.

Using bookmarks in a classroom reduces the time it would take to find web pages and allows a teacher to have multiple sites lined up that they can run through without having to write down or memorize the urls. Writing urls and then trying to type them back is often troublesome because urls have to be exact. This can sidetrack a class and make the teacher look silly. Delicious eliminates this problem.

  • Googledocs
This site allows you to create and host all different types of docs such as word, presentations, and spreadsheets. When using this program you do not have to worry about compatibility between computers or if other computers have the proper program to open your document.

This is especially useful for teachers who use presentations during class. When you need it, it's there. If a class is faster then expected you can move on to new material because you have all your docs with you during every class period.
